How to Sew Japanese Sewing Pattern Book Start to Finish ft. Sew-a-long

hey youtube today we're making a topfrom Japanese selling books from start to finish step by step we will figureout the instructions even though it's in another language I'm going to use thisbook "Couturier Sewing Class" this one is translated into Koreanthere's also a Chinese version I'll add some links in the description for thisbook in case you're interested the author is Yukari Nakano and ispublished by Ninon Vogue Sha in 2015 so it's a 4 years old book but theclothing styles in this book are very clean simple and lasting so let's do aquick flip thru before we begin I'm going to make this top you find thatunder the description there will be a page number of where the instructionsare we are on the instructions page you see there are two versions a short and along one they share the same pattern pieces so they are combined in thisinstructional page so this area here will tell you what fabric to use whatlength and width is needed they will also list all other materials that you needlike interfacing zippers elastic bands you can try a Google Translate but theyusually give very cryptic fortune cookie kind of translations and it's not muchof a use this area here will tell you where the actual pattern pieces are thepatterns number code how many pieces you need to trace out there will usually bean alphabet letter like ABCD to show which pattern sheet it is on. moving onto the sizing you see that there are four sizes s to Double L for tops thefirst measurement is the bust area this is the finished size of the project soif your bust is 95 don't make size s or else it will turn into a body suit youwant it to be loose fitting so you can move around the second measurement isthe length of the top from the shoulders to the hem in each book there is also asize chart guide but since the clothings are in loose-fitting style with a lot ofease of wear built into it I suggest to figure your size by looking at thefinished size of each individual project if you're making a skirt or a pair ofpants the finished size will only tell you the length of the finished projectso to double-check you can measure the actual pattern in the pattern sheet andsee if the true waist area is large enough to go past your hip area mostskirts and pants projects in these books are done with an elastic band soit needs to clear the hip area in order for you to wear it now that we know oursize we're going to hunt down the patterns so pattern sheet "C" ourproject is on page 24 is pattern number 14 two pieces you see that the patternsare printed one over another they're all in actual sizes so I found the firstpiece the front double check and the second piece the back now wehave to figure out if seam allowances are included in the pattern which isvery easy you just take a look at your pattern piece you see the bold lines forthe four sizes and if there's a faint line inside this thin line is a sewingline of size S so that means the seam allowances are included to check on thelength of your seam allowances you just measure from the thin line to the boldline of size S so over here is one centimeter but on the side here maybe1.5 to trace the patterns I use brown paper for wrapping postal boxes and thisis just carbon paper tape together into a giant sheet so you trace all themarkings the arrows and we'll go over these markings a bit later sometimes Ialso use this tracing fabric so the major advantage is that we can sew onthem so you can make a mock up and fine tune it before you make the actualproject and also storing them takes much less space than paper there's a section allabout markings in the book so the arrow shows you how the patterns are aligned on the fabric the dashed lines means you place the the pattern on the fold of thefabric these straight lines are used for aligning two pieces of patterns togetherand this one means you have to fold it to create a pleat and the v-shaped onemeans you have to sew it up into a dart for each project they will show how tolayout the patterns onto the fabric this is very handy if you are using similardirectional prints as in the project you can find additional pattern pieces onthe layout diagram so for my project I need to cut out two more rectangles forthe lower part of the top and also a bias binding pieceyou remember that dashed lines means folded so here this rectangle is cut on thefold of the fabric okay let's do this you see the arrow it is going the sameway as the selvage that is the finished length of the fabric I folded the fabricover so I just need to cut once to get two mirrored pieces one for the leftside and one for the right if you have a cork top table you can just stick pinsright to them I have a DIY on how to make this desk top you can check it outhere you can also pin all three layers together just make sure that the bottomlayer is not shifted on this pattern there's also a short line see that shortline when you cut the pattern make a tiny snip to mark it we will use thismark to line up the front and the back pieces of the armhole because this parthere is the armhole the pattern for the back piece have a dashed line so we willplace that on the fold of the fabric when we cut it out we would get one fullpiece of the back and don't forget to snip that short line I'm cutting out the lower part of thetop I'm just following the measurements that is written under the yellow part ofthe book I do the bias binding differently if you want to see how tomake bias tape from a square I also have a tutorial here so this part here is ahandy overview of all the steps usually number one is preparation of the patternpieces they will have detailed expanded steps for each number so in step one Ihave to interface the neckline to give it some structure I'm just going to usemy existing pattern to cut two pieces of interfacing now I'm going to cut it inhalf to get two pieces the interfacing I'm using is a lightweight type and thebumpy side is where the glue are so you place the bumpy side onto the fabric andpress with an iron to help the glue if you want good resultsyou always iron your pattern pieces I don't always do that but that is thebest practice now we've got all the pieces to make our top these are thefront two pieces with the neckline interfaced we were six at all the areasthat is on step one so the back piece and these are a peplum part it was exacton the sides and the bottom and we also got our bias binding prepared so onemore thing I forgot to mark where the neckline overlapsso this is what I'm doing here so step two is sewing the shoulderstogether we're going to straight stitch them together with the front size facingeach other after we sew up the shoulders we will zigzag over them and ironthem down the instructions will tell you which way to iron the seams down okaynext step is bias binding the neckline I folded the interfacing back onto thefront piece then start pinning the bias binding around the necklineafter I saw them together I make little snips around the neckline so that itwill have room to expand now we're going to finish the necklineI double folded the bias binding over to cover the seams then flip the interfacepart over make sure to poke the corners out so that there is a nice pointycorner over there next we will use the sewing machine tohelp us do the gathering stitches I lower the tension wheel to zero andincrease the stitch length to the longest one we will sew two lines onthe seam allowances very near to the stitch line the goal here is to sew loosecrappy stitches which will make the gathering part a lot easier here I'mmarking the midpoint of the peplum piece we will align that to the center of thefront piece then we pull the top two threads and spread the gathers out tothe to the center so when it's about the same length we can start we can tie aknot and just snip them off and we repeat that on the other side so now we're going to place these twopieces like so and pin them together so both of them have two right sides facingeach other and we're going to sew across and repeat those steps on the back sideof the off the top okay that's the back side I've also top stitch two gatheringdown over here we match the armhole and sew down the sides after we do thatwe'll finish up the armhole we're just gonna pin it down and sewaround it in this area we're gonna spread out the seams and sew ahorizontal line under it we just have to hem the top and it's done so I hopethis tutorial helps you in some way and thanks for watching

Notches — Sewing Basics

When learning how to sew, you’ll probablyhear a lot of different terms and not understand what they mean. This video will tackle the term Notches andthe different way it’s used in sewing. The term notch is used in relation to patternsbut also used in garment and project construction. Let’s look at the way it’s used in patternsfirst. On a pattern this is a notch and you can havea single, double or even triple notches. These areas usually mark a major point onthe pattern such as the hipline or bottom placement of a zipper. And you can usually find them all over a pattern. Pattern makers add them to make assembly easierbecause a notch will be matched with another notch, sort of like putting a puzzle together. So a single notch will go with a single notchand double notch will go with another double. Even so, you’ll still need to be carefulbecause there may be several single notches on your pattern pieces so you still need tofind the correct sides to match. I wouldn’t want to pin a shoulder seam witha side seam just because they both have single notches. Instead, you find the correct sides to pintogether and want to make sure the notches are matched with each other, because it’san important marker on the pattern. So for this side seam, I would pin the topof the seam, the bottom of the seam and then any notches. I would pin the rest in between after theseareas are pinned. Notches may also provide additional hintsin construction. Typically, a single notch indicates the frontof the garment and a double notch indicates the back of the garment. This is why when looking at an armhole orsleeve cap, you’ll always see both a single and double notch, because this is indicatingthe front and back of the sleeve. This will ensure you put your sleeve in correctlybecause the back of the arm usually needs a little more wiggle room than the front andwill result in a more comfortable fit. There are different ways to mark a notch ontoyour fabric. You can cut an outward triangle Mark with fabric chalk or marker Cut an inward triangle Cut a simple slit Or use tailor’s tacks. See our video on how to create them The most important thing is having a specificmark which makes it easy for you to identify and match. If you’re cutting inward, make sure it doesn’texceed past the seamline. Next, let’s talk about the term notchesthat would come up during a project construction. This would be a notch. At first glance it would seem to be referringto the same thing but in this case it’s serving a different purpose. It has nothing to do with the notches on thepattern. In your pattern directions you may see a stepwhich will tell you to trim and cut notches into your seam allowance. So you wouldn’t have a single notch butrather a series of notches in an area after a seam is created. I normally cut my notches about a half inchto an inch apart. The purpose of these notches to cut back onbulk to ensure a flatter seam or area. It’s standard to cut notches into the seamallowances of curved seams, corners and inverted V’s. Some examples would be: princess seams, facingsand collars, waistbands, and necklines. Here’s an example of a collar where I didnot trim or cut notches. The collar looks bulky and not smooth. The second example should look much better. The notches remove excess fabric so it’snot bunching and fighting for room inside the collar and therefore able to lie flatter. In this case, you’ll cut into the seam allowanceto create an inverted triangle and then put another one a half inch or so away from it. The most important thing here is to make sureyou’re not cutting into the seam allowance passed your stitches. Use sharp fabric scissors or trimmers so youcan cut with the tip of scissors. If you accidentally cut into the seamline, you’ll create a hole which will then need to be repaired. If you’re unsure if an area needs notchescut, it doesn’t hurt anything to go ahead and do it. Again, you just want to be careful not tocut the stitches at the seam line. Hopefully, this makes the topic of notchesmuch less complicated. Remember, notches are important, whether ithas to do with patterns or construction, and should not be skipped over. We hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Assemble A4 sewing pattern in GIMP for paperless projecting. Press that CC button for subtitles!

First we open a pdf with A4 or letter pages. This file also contains tutorial. It can take some time, but eventually previews are loaded and we are looking for the actual pattern pages, here the first one is 8th. Look where the pattern ends, page 17. I prefer to write the range, from 8 to 17 as 8-17. Press Enter here Choose 'Images' in the drop down. Each page will open in a separate file. I use 110 because I'm a Linux user. You are probably fine with 100 but check the control square same as you do with printing. Opening many files at once… Select the first one, we'll add all others here eventually. Image -> Canvas size, we need to add room for other pages I add numbers to roughly 4000 wide and tall, we can change it later if it's not enough. Now we add a white background layer. It's on top, so pull it under. Click the page to focus it, we'll insert the next page on top of it first. Click on the second page, Ctrl+A to select all, Ctrl+C to copy Return to the first page to paste. Ctrl+V to paste. Shift+Ctrl+N or that green button that creates a layer to make the selection a proper layer. One of GIMP's oddities. Now we have two pages on top of each other and need to place them side to side. I prefer to move them with arrows plus Shift for speed. Drugging works too but harder to keep them aligned. Now we change the layer mode to Darken Only. It basically makes all 'paper' (white) invisible and we can see lines underneath. Now we can align those lines perfectly. If they become bold you've come too far. It's View -> Zoom -> 1:1 but I used a custom shortcut to enlarge the view. Aligned! If you didn't save before it's time now. Ctrl+S as usual. I save after each alignment. We repeat it for the first row of pages. This is the first page of the second row, so we want to paste it over the very first page and shift down this time. Oops. Don't worry, we'll fix that. Pull the layer under the page 1. Now the same: Darken only and shift until lines are aligned. Don't forget to save! It crushes sometimes. Oops, wrong mode. Easy fix too. We are out of width, need to add some more. Canvas is bigger now but the background layer isn't. Let's enlarge it too. It doesn't become white by itself, so I fill it with white by drugging the color and dropping it. All done, I'm cutting off the excess with Crop tool (Shift+C) Now we can adjust zoom until the square is true, trace from the screen or project the pattern. Don't forget to save! We can also export as PDF from the File menu.

alright actually I think that'sbetter okay and once again I'm broadcasting from my bedroom hi Stefanieand hello champagne twist and in case you haven't noticed right here Jamesreplaced the trim on her bedroom door whoo so um I don't look like I live in aconstruction zone upstairs anymore and he's actually downstairs working on somestuff right now so you may hear some construction noise and I apologize forcertain late we had a bit of an incident with my cat she was a bit of a bad girlum so we just had to chase her back downstairs because she's not allowed uphere anymore so welcome everybody and yeah I've been trying to do as muchsewing as I can although I've been running into some some struggles sewingcan be frustrating at times and this week I've definitely had my share offrost a frustrating moments that's that's for sure so guys let's uh let'sstart chatting Avery and alo everyone watchingand so here's the deal so last week Champaign twist suggested we talk aboutIndy someone patter companies that's what we're gonna do and if you have asuggestion as well for next week or a future show let me know in the commentsand I'm up for anything guys we could talk about whatever you want I don'treally you know I'm not I'm just here I'm here to facilitate so if there's atopic that you think is important like you know selling things or just anythingthat you think would be pertinent for other seamstresses and so it's out therelet me know and we can we can do it obviously as long as it's appropriatefor this channel and has to do with sewing we can definitely do that sowe've got champagne twist Stephanie Annie and Marie hello ladies and so inthe description box I've listed a lot several indie pattern companies the onesthat I'm aware about some of them I have used some of my some of them I have notbut there are so many hello Jennifer see finally I caught you live yes you haveand yes I apologize for starting late might yeah my cat was she's kind of inher own little world so she does she does what she wants and sometimes that'snot always a good thing but I came upstairs right as I was getting ready todo this and I saw her in the guest bathroom she is not allowed upstairs dueto some previous things she's done with her track record so he just had to chaseher back down but she's downstairs now hey Debbie hello we a new how new was sowhere are you I am I was sewing for about four years and I've been doingclothing for about two I started out doing more quilting type projects and Istill do love to quilt in fact I'm working on a quilting project right nowand I'm not gonna lie it's been really frustrating I did not realize thatquilting with batik fabric apparently is more difficult because the weave of thecloth is tighter and more dense because it goes through this wax dyeing processso I've been trying to free motion quilt on my Janome and every few inchesI keep getting thread breakage so I ordered some supplies that are supposedto help me with that so we'll see if it works or not um B I've been on vacationfor the past week and a half and I've been trying to get as many projects as Ican done I've shot a lot of videos and I've got a lot of ideas for futurevideos and I tried to do some sewing so last night I cut out a new pattern I cut outMcCall's m61 em 70601 which is a really cute feminine sleeveless top with somefrills I'm not doing the frilly off-the-shoulder hut cold shoulderversion I'm gonna do the version with the bow in the front and because that'sall I have to fabric for so we're gonna see if that turns out but anyways let'sget to oh in also there's one thing I wanted to ask you guys about while we'rehere — so I've seen a lot of Facebook posts and things on social media thatapparently craftsy I know we've talked about craftsy before just with NBCbuying it apparently craftsy is going to thissubscription model so in the past they've had an ala carte model where youbuy each class separately sometimes those classes can be kind of expensive40 $50 $60 they do a frequent sales but they can that adds up I've probablyspent two to three hundred dollars craftsy glasses over my life andapparently they're going to a subscription model like creativebug howthat will pan out I don't really know I do from what from what I understand thepeople have contacted Kraft see we're told that they won't lose access to theclasses they already have which is good but I have heard um you know againeverything seems to going to this monthly subscription model you know likeNetflix or you know Amazon Prime or like sort of like a cable bill so I thinkthis is an interesting direction and Debbie what pattern companies can yourecommend for plus-size girls you know that is a good question you know I haveheard actually the funny thing is I've heard some people talking about thisrecently on a Facebook er let me try to log in but um if anyone has anysuggestions for Debbie Debbie I have a different body type in you but if anyonehas any suggestions for Deb you feel free to chime in but in the descriptionbox I've listed a lot of the indie patty pattern companies that I've heard ofsome of them I've tried some of them I have not personally tried and there'salso a few websites like indie so and then up craft club where they featuremultiple independent designers all in one web site and they offer PDFdownloads so those are great resources as well but um I've heard and don'tquote me on this I thought I heard that the Colet patterns offer a lot of sizesbecause I saw um I have a friend named um her name is a natural Dame that's ourchannel natural Dame and she did a review on the Collette patterns freas orBeto tank and she is a plus she is aplus-sized seamstress and she had a really good review of that pattern letme actually find it surveyed oh and I'll link it because I thought she andnatural day might have some good I think she might have some good suggestions forthat so let me try to find her um I know the soma holic patterns I've heard herare more for pear-shaped women I do have one of their patterns although I to behonest with you I am NOT personally so knit so I might not be the best one toask but let me find her channel real quick hold on a second but yeah Ithought she did a really good review of thathatteras I'm gonna try to find it real quick there we go Sam has she's gonnalink natural Dan's channel and I think she's had some really good reviews andpatterns she definitely check her out because Ithink she is a good one to follow alright here we goall right and I'm actually gonna comment right here a natural deign often joinsus for these live chats or comments so Debbie I just liked her channel and Iwould definitely check her out she's a really really nice gal and she makessome really cool things so you might enjoy seeing what sewing pattern she'spicked up let's see here um okay and yes Colette patterns and that's what I'veheard I've heard Colette patterns are definitely a very good recommendationall right champagne twists Colette patterns seem to suit slimmer buildsthey have good parents but always make at while especially of your plus sizewe've got Sonya here Colette patterns are very large side at the sized fYI Itried violent recently and I'm having murder on the fit issues violent isknown for fit issues that uh assets that does sound like a bit of a bit of ahassle there but hopefully it's not too bad right but I mean the patterns thatColette does and I have linked to Colette patterns below the patterns dolook really cool I just personally just for some reason just haven't tried themyet I do kind of want to try the free pattern the sort bateau just to see howit is I'm not really heard of the violet though so apparently it has a lot of fitissues that does not sound like a good time let me check that out yeah Phoebe Imean the dresses are really cute they're very cute here and this star bed well Ilike because it's got like this little pleat on the front I think that lookspretty cool so I don't know okay violet okay it's like a collared shirt okaythat's cute but yeah and I like their let's see what their size ranges aresighs they go from size 0 to 18 so that's cool I think there's another onethat I think goes up to size 22 I I want to say is it Greenland studio I don'tquote me on that guys but I do want to talk about so let me know in thecomments um here's what I want to know what isyour favorite indie pattern company tell me why and also kind of um if you wantto share your thoughts on the good and the bad of Amy's pattern companiesthat's kind of what I'm looking to to hear from you guys what do you think isgood and bad about them compared to the big four like McCall's Butterick vogueand simplicity I think for in my opinion so the good thing with indie patterncompanies I think is the you get a lot more instruction the instructionbooklets tend to be a lot more detailed and aimed to people who are unfamiliarwith techniques one of my first patterns was grain line studio and I'm very gladthat that was one of my first makes because the instructions there are verygood and also the blog had a lot of great information and so alongs which iswhat I'm looking for and that's something that I think beginnerseamstresses really need when they're starting out I think the bad thing forme is that personally I'm not a huge fan of PDFs just because I find it to bekind of a really big hassle to print out all those pieces of paper tape themtogether or glue I actually use Elmer's washable school glue I don't use tapebut I find that to be a little bit cumbersome so if there's a way I don'tknow I I personally like in Japan and companies that make paper patterns butthe other downside with the indie pattern companies is that they durricksthey're kind of expensive a lot of them are fourteen to eighteen dollars evenfor some of the PDFs there are sales on them but I do think that is priceyespecially compared to all those sales that you can get for McCall's andsimplicity patterns for a dollar ninety-nine but the trade-off with thebig four is that you don't get that level of instruction you know they don'tcome with color photographs so you're kind of more on your own with the bigwith the big for patterns with the commercial patterns but you do get a lotmore support and actually I've got really good customer service with theindie pattern companies if I have a question I canyou know tag them on social media tag the company and often they'll respondand they'll have some some good insight so I've had a really good experiencewith companies like sohow 7 I had some trouble with the tea house dress withthe facing and they really said sent me a very detailed message on what I shoulddo so I thought that was very cool got a couple more comments okay we've gotJennifer recommends hey June handmade oh that's okay that's cool and you knowwhat guys if you want to link to them link to them as well I really don't careI don't in this case I really don't find that to be spammy at also feel free tolink away to any patterns you really like because that's what we're here foris to share our favorites I've linked to a lot of the ones that I've heard aboutin the description box I think they Tilly I think Tilly in thebuttons is a great indie pattern company because for me the fit is very muchspot-on to my body type and I think the instructions for the patterns areexcellent another one now too I haven't tried I have not tried see more patternsfrom seam work magazine I know a lot of other people have I'm personally notthat down with the monthly subscription that's why I don't even think I don'teven know if I would get a craft season approaching just because I don't wantany more monthly things I'm paying for but I've heard a lot of people talkedabout the seamer patterns closet-case pens is another one I have not tried butI know like everybody else has like the ginger jeans and I think I forgot whichare do they do the Watson bra that's another one I've seen everywhere that Ihave not tried there are so many patterns that I haven't tried that Ifeel like everyone else has all right we've got champagne twists as mr. Beddoeis great for newbies Jennifer yeah she likes hae-joon um champagne twists saysI like the indie companies that have accompanying blogs for each of thepatterns exactly because that's offering you a level of instruction that youdon't get from the dollar ninety-nine patterns or whatever patterns can beprices but PDFs can be reprinted as many times as you like and that is good it'salso good if they offer the print shop versions of youget it printed off you can't you don't have to like get everything you don'thave to run like a thousand sheets through your printer sherry says shelikes Vogue sewing as a great reference sewing daddy is here hello sewing dadwe've got a gentleman in the house I find that PDF files is an issue too Idon't even have a printer at home anymore you know that is we're doingeverything electronically and that is an interesting thing to to point out how wegot penguin and pair your cashmere at is good for plus size I like the name ofthat company cashmere right that sounds very very sleek here and uh let's seehere hello from Jeremy hi Anne and we got a yes sherry says she doesn't matterwhat the pattern we've got Elsa and Stephanie so you got some people thatlike PDFs and again stuff you won't mind I personally find them kind of tediousbut I know everyone has different things that they like so I'm not you know no noworries there's no love lost here because you know we can like them we cannot like them and that's what I wanted to know is just what you what you preferand if there's any pattern companies that I have not listed in thedescription box that you want to share feel free to share yes oh so the Watsonbra is from cloth habit oh and I forgot to add them so cloth habit is another isdefinitely another pattern company I have heard of them before but again it'sone of those ones that I just haven't tried before and sewing daddy yeahthat's a good point a lot of people don't really like it's weird like youdon't use you know the worst is when you have to fax something and it's like whohas a fax machine like and then you don't really want to do it at the officebecause you know you don't I don't know I don't like to fax personal documentsfrom work I just I don't feel comfortable doing thatso I actually defect some documents a couple weeks ago and I went to thegrocery store and then I went to the office supply store and had the faxservice they charge like a dollar page it's insane like the amount of theamount they charge to fax something is crazybut like who has a fax machine in their house anymore I don't know how we gotJennifer she also likes so / oh yes and I have never actually triedso over it either so there's a lot of pet the ones I have tried I've triedTilly in the buttons great I've tried green line studio so house 7 I've triedet lalume she makes lingerie I have tried so sweetness I put a couple badpatterns in there I've tried so sweetness swoon and Noodlehead freshstitch patterns is actually this very small pattern designer that I discoveredthat she makes baby and kids clothes but she was having a sale and they were likea buck each great patterns and I thought they turned out really cute so if you'relooking for baby and kid gifts like dresses robbers leggings and you knowlittle pants and stuff I would definitely recommend fresh stitchpatterns on there's another one called made by Ray and she does women's youknow I keep thinking of more that I didn't include so you know what I knew Iwas gonna forget some so it is what it is I mean got by hand London oh yesthat's another one and you know what I knew I was gonna forget some but thankyou guys because I'm gonna put these all in the comments so there's so many indiepattern companies that are popping up it's I mean it's good because at leastwe have a lot to choose from but it's also kind of overwhelming because youhave so much to choose from and Beth says she's trying the sewing workshopbut printing more than 25 pages yikes yeah and then you're like wowthat's a lot but I don't know if you guys have heard this but um up craftclubbed Elizabeth from up craft Club is developing this like little projectorthing called tight and it's supposed to be a system where you can project theimages on to the fabric directly and it's supposed to eliminate the patternsaltogether which I am not seeing this thing in action but if that actuallyworks I think that would be awesome I know one question would be though howwould you be able to make pattern adjustments and I think that's a reallyvalid question because obviously most patterns don't fit you right out of theenvelope so that might be a little bit tricky but I guess I can get you to thestarting point where you could at least maybe trace it on to your muslin andthen make adjustments but I think that kind of innovation isreally needed in this space just because we spend so much time tracing andcutting out patterns and then adjusting for the fit the amount of time we do itthat even before getting to the sewing is just crazy all right we've gotJennifer there's a company called paper cut patterns that I just discoverednever got to try it but the clothing is beautiful but expensive we've got so soeasy she's got a free pattern for a PDF for a easy tunic Alena Clara frompenguin and parrot says in the UK net printer code UK will print any size for75 P I've just ordered five patterns hey that's really cool that's a goodresource for any of you PDF lovers who wants to maybe get something printed ata low cost in yes again sewing daddy if you're still here thank you for joiningus as the sole gentleman today I have seen I've noticed you've recentlystarted a channel so I think that's really cool to see more guys gettinginto the mix I think that's really awesomeI think we need more we need more men and more people of different walks oflife to try sewing I think that's really cool so I just like to say welcome andif you guys aren't here right now feel free to give this live stream a thumbsup if you're enjoying the conversation and feel again feel free to leave acomment and let me know what what your favorite indie pattern companies are ifthere's any specific patterns you like and also what do you think is good andbad about the indie pattern companies are there any downsides is thereanything you actually prefer about commercial patterns from the big fourwhat's what are your thoughts on this I think the upside about the commercialpatterns for me is definitely the price and the fact that they're printed so Idon't have to like tape anything together and actually in because they'reso cheap like I recently got some pairings for a dollar ninety-nine youcan really get multiple copies and then you don't really need to worry like I'mjust gonna cut it out anyways and if I need anotherI've got another one so I actually ordered multiple copies of the samepattern that I thought I might cut out more than once just so that because fora dollar ninety-nine that's so cheap you could really just get a few of them andthen you don't really have to think too much about tracing it onto something youcan just cut it out work with it and then if you need to cut out another viewor something and you you know you know those pieces were like if it's pantsinto shorts and you cut out the shorts then you don't paint legs at least thenyou've got another copy to work with so I've got a few McCall's patterns thatI'm getting to sewing daddies thanks you I really enjoy the Hobby and sewingDanny what do you so um as a guy do you feel like your pattern options as wellpattern options are more limited especially for men's clothing I'm justcurious to see what guys are interested in sewing so feel free to share and yesthe you're definitely a there's definitely a bit of a gender disparityin here but you know what this has been a lot of fun oh and um the next videothat this vid Thursday's video is featuring a gentleman that's been in thelaunch stream before Keaton quilts so look for that we did kind of aninterview with him about quilting so I think it turned out really fun so staytuned for that all right gotta yeah and Debbie also wants to know what sewingdaddy likes to sew Emily at naptime creations has a number of free sellingpatterns and is it easy to talk to with questions that sounds like a cool namenaptime creations who wouldn't want I need some more I need to do some morenapping what is I don't know I don't get I don't get to do that a whole lot thatsounds pretty cool though all right so it does look like she's got some somestuff on craftsy oh that's cool a designer of free Informerwow she really did okay so naptime creations alright she's got a link tothe crafty page she's got a lot of free patterns there that you can getchampagne twist there are a couple of maybe companies that are turning morecommercial in a negative way other than that I like to support any cat patterncompanies where possible champagne twists that's interesting what do youmean by turning more commercial in a negativeare they doing anything specific that you don't like I'm just curious to knowwhat you know what you see is a negative penguin impaired indi patterns lookgreat but sign is quite restrictive and they are expensive I don't think the bigfour always look very contemporary but they are cheap and lots of these so Iuse them for this yeah and that is a good thing is that they are very verycheap the only thing the only downside I really see is the lack of instructionnow here's the thing if the big four now big four if you're listening if you'vestarted blogging more in doing so alongs and maybe offering more instruction likemaybe on a blog step by step photos that sort of thing I think that would help alot of people because even the pattern like I was reading the instructions forthe pattern I'm working on now the M 70601 and I feel kind of lost and it's arelatively simple pattern and I feel like sometimes the big four are mockingme like it'll say very easy vogue and I'm like very easy like this like veryeasy for the pattern would be like medium to difficult for me so I don'talways agree with their categorization on the level of easiness or level ofexpertise because I feel kind of stupid when it says very easy pattern and I'mlike scratching my head like I wouldn't even know what the heck this is talkingabout so I was reading the instructions for this pattern last night and I'm someof the parts I'm like what does this even mean I have no idea and then youjust feel frustrated and you kind of want to give up so I know sometimes itcan be a little discouraging working with those big pattern companies and guyKristin mckaela is interesting okay yes and that it's actually because I washearing of Lacaille alike it seems like they make custom patterns for you ifanyone has experience with Kayla love me I don't know if I'm pronouncing it rightprobably not but if you have had an experience with them let me know becauseI'm curious to see what kind you know how it is they are anonline-only company that will allow you to customize the pattern before youorder you can request the PDF in any format depending on how you want toprint lisa says to cut the shipping costs for indy there is a company calledin the u.s. called indy so that offers a lot of independence and lisa i havelinked indy so i know they offer i think mostly PDU mostly if not all PDFpatterns but i have noticed in d so we'll sell collections so they do like asummer collection with several patterns willing to give you a discount and bothindy so and up craft club often offer discounts or sales which i think isgreat champagne twist recently a couple acouple of indie seem to neglect good customer service and forming long-termcustomer relationships this is very important and that's one of the reasonsi do go to india pattern companies is forbetter customer service so if you're not getting it you're probably not gonna goback there sewing daddy oh this is adorablei do a lot of dresses for my daughter most men's governments are difficult forme to do but I have made a vest once I also make things for around the houseand things like bandanas for my dog oh that's so awesome out dresses for yourdaughters that is so you know they're gonna grow up and remember that and justhave great memories about how amazing their dad was and how much you did forthem and how much you know you really took the time to make them specialthings that is so wonderful and I'm so glad you're here alright champagne twistsays she likes like Ayla Pauline Alice and cloth kits are also pretty goodso yeah this conversation is great and champagne twists this is a great topicand again if you have a topic that you'd like to bring up in future shows let meknow because I think we could we should definitely do that I would definitelylove to do more viewer recommended topics so let me know if there'ssomething that you would like to see feature and as a discussion you know wecan spend a whole hour and just chat about it and you know evenit's just something you're curious about you know I bet a lot of other people aretoo so you know what why not let's go for it because you know I'm just here Imean I'm just obviously I'm too zoo in this show from my bedroom so it's reallynot hard for me to just go at the top you guys want to want to talk about somuch not a problem here we got Sakuya Luigi I finally made it hello everybodyand yeah this is a good group today and does anyone in here so bags that'sactually one of the things I was doing before clothes but the smooth patternsso sweetness in Noodlehead are a me they're all great I really love all ofthose pattern indie designers and they do really cool stuff lots of you knowlots of really modern looking bags and accessories and I think they're all verycool smooth sewing what I really like about that designer is that she chargesvery like she charges like 595 a pattern which i think is very very cool and veryreasonable and also if you're in her facebook group you get a you get a groupdiscount so I want I forgot what the discount is I want to say it's like 20or 30% but if you joined her Facebook group you get that discount in anythingyou order which is up which is awesome so in so sweetness that's link below shestarted to make videos doing step-by-step videos that you do have topay for some of them but she does have a free one that I linked last week aboutmissing a hobo bag out of faux leather and that was a free pattern so all ofthese people below have for so sort of free patterns for you to try out just tosee if you like them or not which i think is greatalright god alright penguin a pair I'd be interested in here you talk aboutcreating developing and managing a sewing YouTube channel so much to talkabout with that that could that could definitely be an interesting topic umyou know how do you we could talk about blogging and we could talk aboutblogging and that sort of thing um Fanny would love to sew a handbag you when yougot Stephanie she likes swoon pairings and have made a few from crafty Geminihere and you Stephanie that's awesome and oh Lisa J Irecently made the taylor taylor desmond roll-top backed up i have heard of himbefore in his blog and actually sewing daddy you might like this guy TaylorTaylor he sells a lot of men's clothes and I think it's really great to seethat there are men's options out there oh and there was the other one somebodyrecommended a men's pattern company I want to say it was called Lake theory orsomething let me see if I can find it and they had some kind of more modernish clothing patterns for men in like things like boxer shorts and stuff likethat I want I don't know if I'm remembering this right I want to say itwas a thread theory okay yes it was a I think it's called thread theory and Iwill yes I think this is it this is called thread theory and they have stufffor guys so I think that's pretty cool oh wait or is this just okay yeah sothey have it looks like they sell vintage patterns for men and thenthey've got their own patterns and they do yes so their own patterns okay it's alittle let me try it okay so the threat okay so they sell a lot of they sell alot of other brand makers to like the vintage ones but some of their patternsare pretty neat and they're very lucky utilitarian so sewing daddy you mightenjoy this men's clothing pattern company and they don't look too bad umoh else another one this isn't really an indie pattern company but I have madesome patterns from jaylee patterns before and I thought they were prettyokay and they have step by step videos on the YouTube channel which I thoughtwas was pretty cool all right hey we've got penguin in pairs she says I recentlystarted making a pair of thread theory trousers and the instructions are achallenge they have sew along so and that's the thing if the company has likea so long or some videos I feel a lot better about making it but when likethat's the thing with the big four they the instructions arenot very clear and they're not very thorough and I don't know I just Istruggle with that and I'm not like a real I'm not super new to sewing but forme it just feels really frustrating to get to the point you're like I have noidea what's going on and then you sorta like throw it across the room and you'relike ah screw this and then you just if you're like me you just start anotherproject and never finished the one you were working on so like me and Bo goteight seven seven — which I still not finished because I was so frustrated bythe sleeves I do want to cut another one out though which is which I shouldn't dobut done yeah sometimes it can be very if you could just be very frustrating sothere's that oh and I want to announce that there is a winner I did a giveawayon Instagram and I had a bunch of goodies that I wasgonna give away like fabric patterns some little notions and the winner Iannounce the winner on Instagram and actually I already have the packageready to mail to her and after they show I'm gonna go to the post office and dropit off the winner is at frog dot britches dot quilts I believe that washer username I just look that up to make sure frog britches doc post but she hasone she has won the suggests ago from frog britches quilts has won thegiveaway on Instagram and thank you if you did enter on Instagram I reallyappreciate it and hopefully you had fun with this I do in the future want to domore giveaways and do some more fun stuff like thisso hopefully that can happen but but yeah so she is the winner of all thegoodies I was like I think that's a really cute Instagram name it was atfrog dock breeches dot quills I was like that's really cool so I thought that waskind of kind of awesome and she does some like custom she I get I think shedoes some like custom quilts or she does quilts for customers so I think it'svery it's very cool I've got another comment from Sakuya my current projectis a self drafted shirt I feel weird about using powders because I don't knowhow well they fit me and Sakuya I'm not as ambitious as youI usually just go for the commercial patterns and hope they fitI'm a little bit lazy so I like to use pattern companies that are more made formy body shape like the grave land studios work really well for me also thethe Tilly and the buttons patterns work really great for me and I've beenFleming Keith at that actually for the big for the McCall's patterns fit mepretty well spot on so the simplicity not so much but the the Greenline studiois awesome McCall so have seven I had okay luck with the fit although thepattern I made from them the patterns I made from them aren't super fitted sothat might be a good thing so it was a little more forgiving you for the fit Ihave a so a holic pattern but I haven't tried it and there's a lot of them I'veheard and and I want to try someday the closet case ginger jeans I've heard alot of good things about it about that pattern and they seem to have a lot ofonline support like a lot of bloggers have talked about their fit issues andthere's a so long so I think if I did that pattern like that making jeans Ithink there's enough support out there that I could figure it out hopefully butI think when you're a new seamstress and there's not a lot of resources for thepattern that's some things kind of go downhill and you just get reallyfrustrated alright we've got all right Fanny I was wondering the same thingit's cute oh did you make the tea you have on yesI did this is the grade line studio Linden sweatshirt and this is the viewthey have two different views they've got one with long sleeves and a band atthe wrist and at the waistband I made the version that is just hemmed and italso has like a shorter sleeve and the fabric is boardwalk delight fabrics byart gallery and it's a jersey knit a really comfortable fabric and I reallylove this up I love this just knit like it's so cozy and the pattern is supercute the only thing our keller fabrics that Iwish had done there is a print in this pattern collection that has ice creamon it it's mint it's got like a big green aqua background and ice creamcones I made a skirt out of it I really wishthey'd made that Pat that print in a knit in the NIT because that would havebeen amazing they only have the knits in like three different prints but I reallyreally wish they'd made the ice cream conesthat would have been bonkers but he didn't so I got this print that has likethe fleet's like a chalkboard with flavors on it and this I think this issupposed to be reminiscent of like tiles in an ice cream parlor you know liketile walls or something but that ice cream print they make is just amazingand I would have loved love to have a knit fabric that was that ice creamprint I would have bought it all which is a little scary to think about gottaall right she'd know shunova wants to know if there are any easy beginningcosplay patterns I'm a quilter and bag maker clothes making freaks me out otherthan leggings and snow but it can be a little intimidating what I wouldrecommend though is start out with don't start up with cosplay I would start outwith something really easy like this sweatshirt or great lens studio Scouttee or the Colet patterns free Sardo tank I would not start out with thefallout costume because it's gonna get really you're gonna I think you're gonnabe in over your head so if you are new to clothing start go with somethingreally easy the tank is good because you don't have to set in the sleeves somaybe the collect patterns maybe the Cercado tank would be and I'lllink it here I think the cert battle might be a good one for you to startwith just so that you you know you're not like I don't want you get to thepoint where it's too complicated and then you just give up like like me andsome of the other my projects but that would be a good that would be a goodplace to start and glad I did you know but because I'm terrible pronunciationsand you know what I hate like I I'm not the best at it I hate when people likecorrect you on stuff that doesn't matter like you say the name of a city wrong orsomething and then they get it the person gets an attitude and it's likewell actually it's pronounced this way it's likethis is the first time I've ever hearing of this place so can you cut me a breakand you have to be so like such a jerk about it like again I in the long Immelin the scheme of things doesn't really matter I'm saying this wrong not reallybut people get all like upset over it and I don't add annoying if someonepronounces something wrong and it's it it's not gonna make a difference if Isay anything um I usually just don't bother to correct them cuz it's just notworth my time but anyways yeah I don't knowwe've got Debbie does anyone have the letter a little patent system I'm notfamiliar with that um google that and we've got Vic the first only piece ofclothing that I made was a skort a shirt with skorts and read and it truly and itturned out alright let's ounds cool I didn't really heard the word score inquite a while and we've got Stephanie um she has itbut she hasn't tried it we've got Jennifer you bought the Grainline StudioLinden sweatshirt very cool yeah it's such a great pattern it's very easy tomake and if you have a serger it is a breeze so if you have a serger doing medoing this sweatshirt or doing any sort of dance is gonna be super easy for youall right you got oh we got pink Atelier she's here — awesome awesome and okaywe've got Kristen here I'm not heard of lutterloh or I need to look it up soit's a pattern system that sounds kind of interesting and then I'm so not awareof some of these things but that's cool okay so I'm looking at the website nowI'm trying to go to the website okay choosing to make your own okay fashionsee a bit okay they have a bit apparently they've got a videodemonstration I will say the website does kind of look a little dated umhopefully the information is really good the website looks like a little 1995 ishso I'm hoping okay you all they have a system so youcan get like a okay it has 280 fashions and pattern designs in instruction DVDwritten instructions and sewing hints in English a tool set and a cardboardtailors curve alright and also the kid I'm looking for it's a hundred and fiftydollars it also includes acrylic curves and special tape measure a pen two pinsand a roll of adhesive tape okay yeah so it looks like Kanna helps you draftyour own like bodice slipper so it's almost like that Suzy for boss makingclass and craftsy okay oh my gosh the dude this is kind of hilarious I need tolink this this um okay the dude showing you how to make the pattern I don't knowhe doesn't look like your typical seamstress he looks like an accountantor something nah I'm not trying to throw any shade but like I don't know if Ibelieve this guy actually shows I mean he may and I could be totally wrong butI don't know this guy there's there's something very interesting about thisvideo let me a lilium link it cuz it's a okay this is very interestingall right we got Vic does anyone find that patterns of fabric stores can beawfully outdated and shapeless I like buying locally but sometimes they leavea lot to be desired picks T Atelier says I've not sewn with any indi patterncompanies what does everyone's thought better than the big four got anothercomment from I get I'm I'm probably not pronouncing your names right so if I'mnot um okay so Kristen says Kirsten says he does so I met him a few years ago andhe really does know his stuff Wow Kirsten I color me surprised this guylike I don't know like there's IIM notlistening with the sound on but I so I can but like II he just doesn't strikeme as it okay so he's showing you how to make your own your own patterns see yeahI have not really heard of this company before um I will say again the websitelooks the website is probably not the best layout and it does look the websitelooks like it's seriously straight out of the 90s but if you have used thispattern making system before yes I would be curious to know what you would shethought of it Wow and it's a day claim is to come with like 280 patterns orsomething so so that's for fashions and pattern designs it comes to DVD so Iguess it's showing you how to make your own patterns so yeah I don't know Iguess if you have the time to do it and you have you have the desire I thinkthat's awesome I think the good thing about buyingirons though is that you can at least if you find a pattern company that has afit for you at least you can kind of skip all that and get right to thesewing which is what I personally like to do um okay and we've got okay Lisathank you I I'm not I might just be tired at this point I don't I don't knowI've been staying up til like 5:00 or 6:00 in the morning because I've beenhaving trouble sleeping so on yeah I haven't been getting a whole lot ofsleep lately and I took a nap yesterday at like 3 p.m. so that that's where I'mat no just being honest here I Kirsten theyhave patterns going back to the post World War 2 I have some of them from thefifties it's pretty really cool and Kirsten do they still sell thesepatterns like the post-world War two patterns it does look like they sell alot of different ones on the website I'm just kind of confused like how does thissystem work like it looks like he's showing you how to construct the bodicesloper just from like you know using the rulers and stuff but I'm just curious toknow like what okay and then you can also getsome supplemental stuff so I'm just kind of curious to see like what all this isbut this looks very interesting and I will say their illustrations are prettyyoung artistic so they've got like these really cool color or fashion design typethings so that's kind of me and the kid looks interesting I don't know how muchall this costs but the website is definitely intriguing um is this like anwhere is this company based it definitely seems like they're fromEurope somewhere I don't know um but yeah I'm curious Lutter lo I'venever heard of this thing before but uh you know that's how we have these showsso that I can learn about things that I've never heard of before today allright Stephanie says they're from Germany okay we've got I'm interested intrying the cashmere pebbles for Kirby cows and pigs to Atelier Vic what typeof fabric do you guys buy for clothing like shirts um Vic try liquid melatoninto help you sleep I I usually go with wine um does that work why I don't knowyou basically draft something using your memory measurements Kirsten says I thinkthat occasionally select reproductions I got mine firm an online auction site andpixie telly I says I'm dying for some lint in tweedsI've seen those those look amazing I would be afraid to cut into those Iwould probably just buy it and keep it around just because I would never havethe right pattern for it Oh mine is great to have dry high I usually trycheap blonde whatever whatever's cheapest at the store that's what Iusually go with and but yeah well I appreciate you guys I'm learning somestuff I did not know about and wow this letter low patterns think that like I'mkind of blown away they do have almost 30,000 subscribers on YouTube I'm justlike I'm fascinated just to see that I want to all right after the show andafter I go to the post office I want to watch some videos with this dude and seewhat he's saying I'm just very very curious there'sanother channel I found recently that has some very interesting personalitiesit's called embroidery library and it features like a guy named Kenny andanother lady I forgot what her name is like April orsomething um but I don't know these people like their personalities likelike the video style like I feel like they were produced in the 90s but theywere produced now but this channel is kind of fascinating like I don't know Ijust have a weird I have a weird fascination with this channel and Iprobably should but I'm gonna link it to you guys anyway so you can check it outas well all right we've got Holly IndyGo Junction I've been wanting to purchasefrom but if not so far does anyone I'm feedback on from fromthem yes so if anyone has some experience with indigo indigo Junctiondefinitely help Holly out I have not tried that company before and we've gotDebbie if you're interested in the letter lo system of ebay I'm sure youcould buy the entire kits with all the rulers instructions for less than if youbuy it online okay so maybe ebay Allah to check that out I'm not really in themarket for that right now just because I don't think I I'm gonna be honest Idon't think I have the time to dedicate to that sort of thing right now butmaybe in the future that would be interesting all right I'm looking it upon eBay oh yes there actually there's a lot of oh this is cool they've got onefrom this is really neat they've got some systems from like the 50s and the60s on eBay so that's kind of cool very me Wow and it shows you how to make allthis stuff oh my gosh the photos of the okay sorry I'm going down a bit of aninternet um internet rabbit hole so I apologize butthat's the way my mind works so we're gonna we're gonna do that but I don'tknow I'm just talking at this point and I don't really know what I'm saying Ithink I need some water real quick but yeah feel free to keep sharing yourfavorite you'd be padding companies and a box so yes take a seat up I'm allabout if you follow me on Instagram snapchat I have definitely uh posted alot about my love for box wine I'm a big fan of the Bota box wine I'll put alink in there at the Bota box where lo is my favorite and it's verybudget-friendly it's very budget-friendly and also theboxes appear to be recycled cardboard so maybe environmentally friendly I'm gonnago with that but yes now oh yeah we started dyeing I don't know how we gothere but we started out talking about any pattern companies and now we'retalking about box line but you know that's okay it's okay here we go Botabox Merlot also they have another line called Nighthawk which was veryinteresting see if you have not tried the boat a box or a low okay you alsohave to be before you get to the website you have to acknowledge your of legaldrinking age so be sure to do that some link to the Bota Box site yes I'mwe're doing all kinds of sharing today but the other one I like is the theNighthawk oh my gosh they've got some new oh my gosh they've got some new newwines Wow okay so they're apparently gonna start offering dry rose a verycool and the Nighthawk black that one was actually just the description alonemade me want to try it is rich aromas of raspberry blackberry caramel and hintsof vanilla with lush flavors of deep berry fig jam dark chocolate toastedmarshmallow and baking spice this smooth full-bodied wine culminates in a juicylingering finish and in case you're wondering no I have not been drinkingyet today so I swear no drinkin yet but maybe maybe later depending on if wehave any wine left I don't know but I need to go to I do need to try to go tobed a little earlier today cuz I have to go back to work tomorrow I knowbut this has been a really nice fun break and I have gotten some sewing doneeven if some parts have been a little little frustrating but you know it is itis what it is and the party's gotta end at some point so today is the last dayof my personal my personal sabbatical Vic I'm at work now all on a SundayI'm sorry Vic sorry all right I'm sorry the Sequoia says if your internet isacting up and I'll probably be signing off soon just before I say anythingreally stupid but I do I do like penguin in pairs Debbie How to Sew Darts | Beginner & Advanced

hey everyone welcome back to my channel continuing our a to z sewing technique series i'm going to be teaching you a little bit about darts and showing you two different ways to sew them but before we do that let's look at the anatomy of a dart here you can see these two lines that make up the sides of the dart and these are called dart legs at the bottom of the dart legs we have notches and at the top we have a dart tip if you look half an inch below the dart tip there's a punch hole punch holes tell the person sewing the dart that the dart is ending and it's always present on industrial sewing patterns now that we have that out of the way let's take a look at how to sew a dart if you've never sewn one before first we're going to trace off the pattern piece we're working on when you get to the dart you'll want to trace off the notches for the dart legs and the marking for the dark tip starting out it's not necessary to transfer the mark for the punch hole but it's good practice to start early on once it's traced off use a ruler and connect the dart tip to each notch once your pattern piece is cut out and your dart legs have been traced onto the fabric you can match your notches together by folding the dart in half and then pin them together up to the dart tip now we can take it to our sewing machine when you start sewing you want to start at the notches and sew towards the dart tip and you're going to want to keep the center of your foot right on that chalk line that we drew earlier to make sure we have a perfectly straight line when you get to the end of your chalk line you can do a simple back stitch and then we can take it over to our ironing board to get a nice looking dart you'll first want to press the area that you just sewed and make the intake especially flat so whenever you open it back up there won't be too much extra bulk and this will also set your stitches while you're doing this avoid the tip of the dart because you don't want to accidentally press a crease into the part that you're actually going to be able to see and then once that's nice and flat you can open it up and press whichever direction the dart intake is supposed to fold towards so you'll have to check your pattern to see which direction that is but on a bodice it's typically to the center and here I don't have a ham but if you have a tailor's ham press on top of that you'll get a much nicer finish to your final garment now if you look closely you can see there's a little dimple at the dart tip and you'll notice this regularly with beginner sewers because they're using this method to sew their dart but once you're comfortable with sewing darts you should start using the more advanced method okay so for the second method we're going to trace off our pattern piece but this time we're not going to trace off the dart tip notches and punch hole only and instead of drawing in the dart legs we're going to go straight to pinning this method we're going to start out the exact same way we did with the last which is to start with a back stitch at the notches and then we're going to sew a straight line to the punch hole now last time we did it to the dart tip this time to avoid the puckering and dimpling we're going to do it to the punch hole this takes some practice but once you do it a few times you'll be able to sew a straight line without having to chalk it in no problem now once you get towards the end of the fabric instead of doing a backstitch like last time we're going to do a slight curve on our stitches right on the fold of the fabric and then for that remainder of half an inch from the punch hole to where our dart tip would be marked you're going to stitch as close to the edge as possible and this is going to get rid of any dimpling that you might have before and here you can see my finished dart now if you look closely at the punch hole through to the dart tip you can see how I've stitched you're right on that fold and you want to try and get as smooth of a taper as you possibly can now with these leftover thread tails instead of just cutting them off we want to be able to make sure that our stitch is going to last through the wash and through multiple wears so we're just going to do a couple simple square knots and then you can trim off the excess thread tails moving on to pressing our dart we're going to do it the exact same way I showed in the last method by first pressing our intake flat and then opening our dart up and pressing in take towards whichever side our pattern dictates now if you have a tailor's ham once again you need to use it because it is going to give you the best results and taking your time on the pressing and doing it correctly can hide so many mistakes and will make your garment looks so professional in the end now if you don't have a tailor's ham a little trick that I picked up is to get in there to press the dart tip really well it will pucker if you are pressing it flat like here you see all these little puckers now if you want to get that little tip right there you take the tip of your iron and you press into the tip of the dart and at the same time you lift up the fabric so that way there's no dimples being created as you're pressing because you don't want to press any of those creases in to the outside of your garment they're really difficult to get out on some fabrics once you press them in so there's my little trick that I do but I really need to invest in a ham ok here is my finished dart once it's done being pressed and if you look closely you can see that those tapered stitches at the dart tip has helped to blend our door into the rest of the fabric seamlessly without any puckering or dimpling now when you first start out sewing darts it's ok to have these puckers it happens all beginners are going to start out that way but once you get comfortable sewing darts you really want to start implementing these more advanced techniques that way you can avoid having these dimples directly on your bust it's not a flattering look it's ok when you first start out but over time you don't want to keep having these on all of your garments that would drive you crazy ok guys if you have made it this far I would like to know what are some mistakes that you made when you first started sewing and if you're still a beginner sewer what are some things that you are hoping to learn moving forward if you guys haven't been following along up to this point I have the rest of the videos for this series linked below and if you're new to this channel then go ahead and hit subscribe because we have the rest of the alphabet to go before we're done with this technique series so until next time bye

Cute Summer Top! 👚 Butterick B6688 Sewing Pattern Review

Let's talk about what went right andwhat went wrong with this sewing pattern welcome to the Sewing Report i'm Jenthis channel is all about sewing crafts and DIY projectsif you're new here consider subscribing because i'm doing a series called Learnto Sew in 2020 for the true beginner and i want to focus in on a sewingpattern that i completed recently it is B6688 which is a women's blouse i gotthis on sale a while ago and i thought it would be a fun projecti did view B which has these really cute flouncy sleevesi am in love with the sleeves alone and i wanted to share my thoughts about thepattern some general tips and just stuff to lookout for in the pattern instructions first of all let's talkabout sizing i cut out a 14. it's a little bit loose fitting and i dohave pretty small shoulders so i find with a lot of top and dresspatterns the sleeve cap extends out past where myactual shoulder cap does i'm usually too lazy to make a patternadjustment so it is what it is this is pretty loose fitting i probablycould have cut a size 12 but i'm sort of liking how loose it is idon't like feeling constricted in shirts and i'm one ofthose people i cannot stand like round neck crew neckor like turtlenecks i feel claustrophobic wearing them and iwill only wear shirts right now with a v-neck if it's like a tight jokertype shirt i'm out i can't do it so i like thestyle it's got a very clever construction technique forthe neckline which i'll go into a little more lateryou can see there is a split neck and there is a facing on the front of theneckline and a double yoke on the back overalli like this pattern i would recommend it i think it'sgenerally a pretty easy sew as we get into this i'lllet you know what went wrong with this pattern and it waspretty much all user error so i certainly don't blame the pattern or thepattern instructions i think they were pretty good overall iwould rate this pattern as being pretty beginner friendly there wasnothing in it that i found particularly challenging or reallyfrustrating i absolutely love the design of ub whichis what i made the sleeves again super cute this shirtis so wearable and you could really dress itup or down i think it really fits into the current trend of like the looseflowy shirts you can do the thing where you tuck it in just at the fronti also made a sash out of the same fabric so i could use that as a belt sothere's a lot of ways you can wear this top you can dress it up you can dress itdown and the fabric i used is one i've hadfor a very long time this is cotton and steel rayon chalice which i think was apretty good choice overall you really want a fabric that's kind of lightweightand flowy the example photo looks like it's made of some sort of polyestercrepe and it looks really pretty on the modelso i would certainly not recommend like a quilting cotton or anything heavynow one thing to note is that sometimes sewing lightweight or slippery fabricscan be tricky so i have a tip for you with rayon or anything like maybe like alightweight cotton poplin something that's a natural fiber i useterial magic i soaked all my pattern pieces after i cut them out in materialmagic and then i pressed them i have a whole other video just abouttyrial magic and i'm going to throw in some footage here of me goingthrough the process with this particular project but that made thefabric really easy to work with what tyrialmagic does is it stiffens the fabric temporarily so once i applied the tyrialmagic and then pressed it it made it just so much easier to work with and sewi didn't get all the slippiness and going through the sewing machine it wasjust a lot easier i'm glad i did it i know material magic can be a little bitpricey but if you're going to be doing aproject and you want to eliminate a lot of the headache i would really recommendusing that product on your fabric because it'll make your lifejust so much easier once i finished making the blouse i gently hand washedit and then threw it in the dryer for a little bit just to get some of thewrinkles out and then i additionally took my garment steamersteamed it and then i pressed areas like the hems i find with rayonchalice that it does tend to wrinkle a little bit so just know that going inthat if you want to make it in that fabric after you wash it you are goingto need to do some pressing and steaming and thenit'll look like this from the cutting to completion this tookme about three days one night i just cut all the fabric outand marked all my pieces then another two days i actually did allthe construction the pressing all that stuff i'm super slow though soi know you might be a lot faster than me but i'm certainlynot some sort of like expert seamstress so i found thispattern pretty easy to follow i didn't think there were any confusingparts of the instructions for the most part but i will share themistakes i made for one i should have used a slightlyheavier stabilizer on the facing piece there is a facing piece on the inside ofthis neckline and that's how it has a clean finish on it i used apretty lightweight sheer interfacing i should have usedsomething slightly heavier just because i noticed that thisneckline part tends to flop around a little too much for my likingthe second fail on my part also had to do with the facingthis was certainly the most difficult portion of the pattern and i wouldn'teven say it's that hard but this is what kindof tripped me up so i thought i would pass alongthe information so that hopefully you don't have to go through what i didso once you apply the interfacing and then i finished off the raw edges of thefacing on the serger that's how i like tofinish off a lot of my seams it's pretty easyand doesn't take a ton of time so once you do thatthen you're supposed to sew on two lines for the main piece and then the facingpiece then you cut a slit down the middle and you'resupposed to flip it right side out press it and then edgestitch it you're supposed to cut just to the tipof the like v that you're stitching i feel likei cut it a little bit too close because when i went to hand washthe item and then threw it in the dryer like this was after i was all done thestitching in the fabric kind of came loose andstarted fraying so i ended up having to hand sew thatpart just to kind of try to fix it when i didthat it really messed up how the facing lies and then how the fabric on thefront of the v-neck gathers and i'll show you a close-uphere it doesn't look extremely clean like it did originally before ilaundered the item and in hindsight i know now that if iwas to do it again i wouldn't snip that part quite so closeto the stitching i also would have put some fray check onthose edges of the fabric because when i threw it in the dryerthat's when things started to like fall apart sothat was on me though and not really on the pattern but just so you know ifyou're making that pattern something to watch out for for sureif you want to go more in depth into the actual sewing processi have a separate video that i'm going to link here and i'm going to link downbelow in the description box really going moreinto the actual sewing pattern instructionsand how to do a lot of common techniques soif you want to see more of that check out that video and it doesn't evennecessarily apply just to this pattern but a lot ofsewing patterns have the same types of techniques that calls for inthe instructions something that i really appreciate aboutthis pattern is kind of the ingenious way that the neckline comes togetheri thought that was pretty cool and i'll talk a little bit about thatso there is the facing piece on the neckline and then there's the main frontpiece then there is a back yoke and thenthere's like an inside yoke piece the top portionis actually like four pieces but overall i felt like thepattern pieces were pretty simple like not a ton of stuff to cut out but whatyou do is you put the facing piece on the front first and thenyou put on the back yoke piece then you put the like liner yolk pieceon last there is a little bit of hand stitchingwith this pattern i didn't really mind that too much it wasn't a lot of handsewing and i i liked the way it left a clean finishso the inside yolk piece looks very neat on the inside and it ithought that was pretty cool but i liked the way it came together i thought thatwas one of the coolest parts of this patterni'm freaking in love with the sleeves i think the sleevesthis is one of the cutest sleeves i've ever sewnand i love this shirt overall i think the fabric choicei picked is pretty appropriate for the pattern and it's very funyou could wear this shirt pretty much all year round i live in florida soi can see myself wearing this a lot i it is driving me a little bit crazythat i messed up the split neck in the facing but you know what can you doi think it still looks pretty darn good and i would certainly make this patternagain i didn't find it too difficult and i think it was fun to make so thatis my review of b6688 if you've made this pattern let me know below in thecomments what you think and if you have anyhelpful tips share those as well if you're looking for some other videosto watch here on this channel i have a lot of beginner sewing videosso check one of those out i do have one on how to use a sewing machineif you are brand new here so hopefully you can find this helpful but i'm Jenwith the Sewing Report i'll see you guys again in the next video

How to Sew Custom Pattern Weights

If you plan on cutting out fabric pieces usinga rotary cutter, then pattern weights is a must have in your sewing room. While thesecan be purchased at your local fabric store, you can also make your own and it’s a greatway to use fabric scraps. For supplies you’ll need your fabric scraps, all purpose thread, uncooked rice and, optional, ⅜” ribbon For tools, you’ll need your sewing machine, pins and needles, scissors or a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler. For each pattern weight, you’ll need tocut out a rectangle that’s 8” by 4”. Cut a piece of your ribbon 2” in length.Fold the ribbon in half and pin it to one of the 4” sides, 1” down from the edge. The raw edge of the ribbon should line up with the raw edge of the fabric.Fold the 8” side in half, right sides together and pin two of the raw sides together. Sew ¼” seam allowance on the two pinnededges. Don’t forget to backstitch. Clip off the corner, without cutting yourstitches. Turn it right side out. To get the triangleshape, pull out the sides so that the seam falls in the center. And then fill with rice Turn the top raw edge ¼” to the insideand pin. When you can’t put anymore rice inside then it’s time to sew our openingclosed. To sew the top edge closed I'm going to be ding a slip stitch. And you can see I am using a contrasting color so it's a little bit easier for you to see. But you definitely want to do this with a matching color thread. So I am coming out of one side. I'm just going to grab a little bit of this folded edge on the opposite side. And because we don't want the rice to come out of this area. You want to make your stitches fairly small. I'm just going to gently pull that. And now I am going to go back to that first side. And grab a little bit more fabric on that folded side. And then go back to the second side. So I am just pulling gently in between and I am just going back and forth between the two sides, again keeping my stitches fairly small. And that’s how easy it is to make your ownpattern weight, plus it’s be cuter than anything you can buy. With the added loop, you can either hang your weights on organizing hooks or use another ribbon to hold them alltogether when not in use. Just repeat the process until you have the number of patternweights that you need. We hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Pleasesubscribe to get notified of our weekly releases.
